What to know before you apply.

The useful local context, without the brochure language.

  • Hybrid is the Malta default

Since 2020 most office employers settled on two or three days in the office. Fully remote within Malta is offered mainly by tech teams, customer support operations and a few marketing and finance roles.

  • Licensing shapes who can be remote

Gaming and financial licences often require key staff to be tax resident in Malta or at least in the EU. That is why "remote" in a Malta listing usually means remote from Malta or from another EU country, not worldwide.

  • Customer support goes remote in shifts

Multilingual support teams at operators and outsourcers run remote shifts after onboarding on site. German, Italian, Nordic and Dutch speakers are the most sought after.

  • Tax follows where you sit

Spend 183 days or more in Malta in a year and you are tax resident there. Working remotely from abroad for a Malta employer creates obligations in that country too, so employers usually fix the work location in the contract.

  • Nomad Residence Permit for foreign employers

Non-EU remote workers employed by a company outside Malta can live on the island under the Nomad Residence Permit (gross income of €42,000 or more, 10% tax on authorised income). It does not cover jobs with Malta employers.

  • Coworking and connectivity

Fibre is widely available and coworking spaces operate in Sliema, Valletta, Birkirkara and Gozo. Many remote hires still start with a few weeks in the office to meet the team.

Local market guide

Working remotely for a Malta employer

Chapter 01

What remote work actually looks like in Malta

Malta is a small island with a dense office cluster, so the remote-work conversation here is different from a large country. Commutes are short, most colleagues live within twenty minutes of the office, and employers lean on hybrid rather than fully distributed teams. A typical arrangement in tech, iGaming, marketing and finance is two or three days in the office with the rest from home; some teams keep one anchor day a week.

Fully remote roles do exist. Engineering teams at the larger operators and the fintechs hire remote within Malta or within the EU, customer support operations run remote shifts for multilingual agents once they are trained, and a few marketing, CRM, content and finance roles are advertised as location-flexible. Listings on this page are tagged remote or hybrid by the employer and verified when the role is published, so the label reflects the actual arrangement and not a hope.

Chapter 02

Why licences limit where you can work from

Most of Malta's larger employers hold a licence from the Malta Gaming Authority or the Malta Financial Services Authority. Those licences impose substance requirements: certain key functions must be performed by people who are resident in Malta, and personal data and player funds must be handled inside controlled environments. Operators also run their regulated activities from Malta for tax reasons, which means the employment relationship is expected to be Maltese.

In practice that is why a role described as remote usually comes with a condition: remote from Malta, or remote from a named EU country where the group has an entity. Fully worldwide remote roles from Malta employers are rare and tend to be contractor arrangements. If you plan to work from outside Malta for part of the year, agree the countries and the number of days in writing: both the employer's payroll and your personal tax depend on it.

Chapter 03

Tax, residency and permits for remote workers

Malta taxes residents on a progressive scale, with the top rate of 35% applying above €60,000 of chargeable income, and social security contributions of 10% from the employee matched by the employer, capped at a weekly maximum. You become tax resident by spending 183 days or more in Malta in a calendar year, or by making Malta your ordinary residence. Remote employees of Malta companies are therefore normally taxed and insured in Malta like any office worker, and their net pay works out the same (the salary calculator on this site shows the take-home figure).

EU and EEA citizens can take a remote job with a Malta employer and move freely; they register with Identità and Jobsplus once here. Non-EU citizens need a work permit for a Malta employer exactly as for an office role: the Key Employee Initiative from €45,000 gross, the Specialist Employee Initiative from around €25,000, or a standard single permit.

The Nomad Residence Permit is a separate route for non-EU citizens who keep a job or business outside Malta and want to live on the island while working remotely for it. It requires a gross income of at least €42,000 a year and taxes authorised remote income at 10%. It cannot be used to take a job with a Malta-based company, so it is relevant to digital nomads rather than to the listings on this page.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Practical answers for candidates considering this market.

  • Are there fully remote jobs in Malta?

Yes, but they are a minority. Tech teams at iGaming operators and fintechs, multilingual customer support operations and some marketing and finance teams hire fully remote, usually remote from Malta or from another EU country. Hybrid working, two or three days in the office, is the default in most office-based sectors.

  • Can I work remotely for a Malta company from another country?

Sometimes, if the employer agrees and the role is not restricted by a gaming or financial licence. Working from another country for an extended period creates tax and social security obligations there, so employers either limit it to a number of days per year or employ you through a local entity. Agree it in writing before you start.

  • How is remote work from Malta taxed?

If you live in Malta 183 days or more in a year you are tax resident and pay Maltese income tax on a progressive scale, with the top rate of 35% above €60,000, plus 10% social security matched by the employer. A remote employee of a Malta company is taxed exactly like an office employee.

  • What is the Malta Nomad Residence Permit?

A residence permit for non-EU citizens who work remotely for an employer or clients outside Malta. It requires a gross annual income of at least €42,000 and taxes authorised remote income at 10%. It does not allow you to take a job with a Malta-based company; for that you need a normal work permit.

  • Which remote jobs are easiest to get in Malta?

Multilingual customer support is the most accessible: German, Italian, Dutch, Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian and Danish speakers are hired continuously by operators and outsourcers and often move to remote shifts after training. Software engineering, DevOps, QA, CRM and content roles follow.

  • Do hybrid jobs in Malta require you to live in Malta?

Yes. Hybrid means a fixed number of days in a Malta office, so you need to live within commuting distance. Most hybrid employees settle in Sliema, Gżira, St Julian's, Msida, Swieqi or Birkirkara, all within a short bus ride of the main office clusters.
