Working in Malta in English: which jobs need Maltese and which do not

Maltese and English are both official languages, laws and contracts exist in both, and the private sector that hires from abroad works almost entirely in English. That makes Malta one of the few EU countries where an English-only candidate faces no language barrier at all in most sectors.

English in Malta

English has been an official language since independence and is the language of secondary and university education, of business and of most media. Around nine in ten residents speak it, and the large expatriate population, roughly a quarter of the workforce, uses it as the common language at work. Maltese remains the language of daily life for Maltese families, of the public service and of local politics.

02

Sectors that run in English

iGaming, tech, finance and financial services, insurance, fund administration, corporate services, pharmaceuticals, aviation services and most of hospitality operate in English from the first interview to the last email. Teams are international, documentation is in English and listings rarely mention Maltese at all. Customer support operations serve other countries in their languages, with English as the team language.

03

Where Maltese is needed

Public-sector jobs generally require Maltese, as do teaching in state schools, most of healthcare administration (though clinical roles are filled from abroad and work in English), local retail banking branches, local-market sales, some legal and notarial work and customer-facing roles serving a mainly Maltese clientele. Listings on this site that need Maltese carry a Maltese language tag, so they are easy to spot and easy to exclude.

04

Other languages pay a premium

Because the iGaming operators and outsourcers serve Northern Europe, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands from Malta, native or fluent speakers of German, Italian, Dutch, Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian and Danish are in constant demand for customer support, KYC, content and CRM roles. These are usually the fastest jobs for a newcomer to land, come with relocation support more often than not, and pay above the local entry level for the same work.

05

How to search

Nearly every listing on myjob.mt is open to English speakers, so the useful filters are the ones that exclude: skip anything tagged with Maltese unless you speak it, and add your other languages as tags to surface the roles that pay for them. The jobs-for-foreigners page lists roles with relocation packages, and the sector hubs for iGaming, tech, hospitality and finance link into the full lists.
